Informal Adult and Community Learning

Informal adult and community learning (IACL) describes a broad range of learning, usually unaccredited, that brings together adults of different ages and backgrounds to pursue an interest, address a need, acquire a new skill, become healthier or learn how to support their children.

Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS ) funds informal adult and community learning through the £210m pa Adult Safeguarded Learning budget. The bulk of provision funded though this budget is delivered or commissioned by local authority providers.  FE colleges, Specialist Designated Institutions (like the Workers' Educational Association) and some voluntary organisations also deliver and/or commission provision.
